F-I-L Worries....

You may well know that my Father in Law moved down to be close to us recently. I have always got on well with him and he is a lovely man. We are, however, beginning to worry about him. He is becoming more and more forgetful. Short term memory-wise anyway. He can't remember what he had for dinner last night, when we are going on holiday. He can talk for hours on things that happened 30 years ago. Hours. And hours. We are trying to get him to go and talk to his doctor, but he doesn't see that he has a problem.

An old friend, the widow of his best friend who died at Christmas, has been visiting recently. He has been shockingly mean to her. He calls her "that woman" and has not cooked for her, doesn't speak to her and is short with her. I am upset with his behaviour, as are his sons. The lady in question is just lovely and says not to worry about the way he is treating her. She thinks he is ill. It is so sad. I know he needs help, but hate to see her suffer. All the family have tried to rally round and care for her. We are trying to be generous to him - treat him almost as a child. But it is difficult to bite one's lip sometimes.

I don't know, what with my Mum and my Man's Dad.............

Oh dear. That does not sound good. I hope he changes his mind about seeing the doctor.

Please get him to change his mind about seeing a doctor. You have every reason to be worried.

But, remember to take the time you need to focus on yourself andyour family. They will need you.

Maybe one of his sons could offer to drive him to his next doctor visit and say something to a nurse or the doctor personally? Then the doctor could ask him some pointed questions and maybe he would talk about it? Good Luck!
