What were the Highs and Lows of 2013?

Over the last year I have connected in real life with some of the bloggers I read. Its an odd thing ... to finally come face to face with someone you have only known on line previously. I briefly met Kate from Kate on Thin Ice at BritMums Live, where she was hosting one of the meeting rooms. I had been aware of her because of the hard work and dedication she puts into the Charity connections BritMums is involved with. I think both of us were a bit shy in real life, but as the year has gone on I have chatted with her on Twitter quite a lot and she has tagged me to write this post. As its New Year's Day today seems like the right time to post my version... so here goes!

1.What was your happiest event in 2013?
I think I can safely say that my happiest moment was when I graduated in the summer of 2013.I dropped out of university where I had been studying History of Art with Italian and Classics when I was 22, having completed 2 years of my course. 20 odd years later I started at the Open University in the hope of gaining my degree. I did and I did better than I could ever have dreamed, gaining First Class Honours. The day in June when I went to Ely cathedral to graduate was one of the best days of my life. I collected my gown and was helped to dress correctly for the ceremony. As the gown was placed on my shoulders the tears streamed down my face. I remember the man saying "I hope those are happy tears?" All I could sob was "Its just been such a long time coming..." My heart was so full of joy, of pride, of the realisation that after all these years I had achieved something I had thought impossible. That was my happiest day.

2.What was the saddest thing to happen?
I am hoping that this will turn out not to be sad, but inspiring, but I have felt sad this year... Although the year started with all my friends healthy and well, the close of 2013 sees four of them undergoing treatment for cancer. Their courage in the face of suffering inspires me and their positivity fills me with hope, but it is human nature to worry and to fear for the future.

3.What was the most unlikely thing to happen, but which actually went ahead and did?
Well ... I would imagine you could put down my graduation for this one!! Who would have thought??

4.Who let you down?
I don't think anyone has let me down ... I count myself very fortunate to be surrounded by damn fine, loving people.

5.Who supported you?
When you ask this question the first person who rushes into my mind is my man. He is kind and loving and he is my best friend in the world. I miss him when he's not with me and I look forward to seeing him. He knows how to make me feel safe and takes the micky out of me when I get too serious.
But, you know ... when I consider this question I know that he wasn't the only one to support me. My boys are there for me when I need them, with hugs and cups of tea, with straightened cushions and laughs. My friends at work know when I need a pick up or a prosecco, they let me be me and I laugh with them. And fellow bloggers, fellow Twitter friends, some I know in real life, others I don't, are there for me when I rant about my children in the middle of the night.
All in all ... I am very lucky.

6.Tell us what you learned?
I have learned a lot this year. I've learned that when it comes to people I love or people who are in trouble I am patient, calm, loving. When it comes to people I consider lazy, selfish or dishonest I am absolutely intolerant. I don't suffer fools and I am very bad at hiding my feelings. I speak my mind when I see something I think is unjust, without always thinking through the consequences.

7.Tell us what made you laugh.
Lots made me laugh this year. I have laughed until I cried with my friends.Celebrating my friends' 40th birthdays we ate lunch, opened 40 presents and drove the waiter mad with our helpless laughter. My husband makes me giggle like a nutter sometimes. Children in the playground have told me jokes and other children have made me guffaw out loud in the library when I've marked their spelling sentences and they've risen to the challenge of "making their teacher laugh out loud". I laugh a lot.

8.Tell us the things that made you cry.
I may laugh a lot, but I have to admit that I cry a lot too.... My family say I cry at adverts ... true. I think its good to cry. I cried when I found out my friend had lost her hair from chemo. I cried when my friend was diagnosed with cancer again 18 years after beating it for the first time. I cried at my graduation. I cried last night when I stood 5 feet from Diana Ross and she started to sing "Ain't no Mountain High Enough", I cried when I read the thank you letters from the children in my class last summer, I cried when I got lost in the fog on a mountain in Italy. I cried as I stood before The Burghers of Calais at the Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin exhibition. As I said, I cry a lot.

9.Tell us 3 things your children did to make you feel proud.
I am always proud of my boys because they are good, honest, kind young men. Sometimes they drive me bananas with their hormones, but they are fundamentally wonderful. My youngest son has blossomed this year, gaining in confidence and enjoying his music again. He is funny and kind and so very loving. He is loyal and caring. My oldest son is in his GCSE year and has just completed his mocks. We have yet to receive his results, but he amazes me with his laid back approach. He is so incredibly calm and relaxed. He is also very loving and supportive. Both boys fill me with love.

10.Tell us the things that made you proud of yourself.
This is a funny one, because, if I'm honest, I don't often feel proud of myself. I try my best to be a good and kind person, but I always find myself wanting. I was, of course, proud of myself at my graduation (did I mention that??!)

11.Tell us the challenges you overcame.
This year has been a good one for me. I don't think I really have faced too many big challenges. Really my challenges have involved trying to support other people without breaking down. After all, if you are ill or in trouble the last thing you need is a friend blubbing. I have dug my nails into my thighs several times to stop myself getting upset and then blubbed in my car alone, but that's not really a challenge is it? Our escapade in Turkey where we narrowly avoided being conned into carrying prescription drugs through customs was a challenge. I'm glad that although I am honest I am also not a fool and I questioned what was asked of us. I am still trying hard to be a kind person. As I said earlier, I don't suffer fools and its a challenge for me to be patient and tolerant ... an ongoing challenge!

12.Tell us the things you would like to change about your life in 2014.
This year sees my husband and I turn 50. I am determined to hit my birthday as fit and healthy as possible. I have been exercising 6 days a week and eating far less for about a month now and have lost 7 pounds as well as inches from my waist, hips and boobs. I want that to continue.I am brushing up my French which has become un peu rusty over the last few years. I want to make the most of every opportunity, perhaps do more painting and drawing and possibly join a choir. I want to declutter my house, keep it beautifully clean and neat (yeah right!!) and work hard in my garden this year. I also want to see much more of my mum. She is 77 now and having been through a health scare this year with her I have realised just how much she means to me. I want to be a good mum and a good wife, a good friend.

So... that is my review of 2013. I hope you found it interesting. If nothing else it has made me think. I am not going to tag anyone, but I would love to read your take on this topic. Thank you Kate for tagging me - this has been an interesting exercise for me.

Happy New Year to all of you who read this. I wish you health and happiness. I plan this year to keep a jar in my kitchen and I will fill it with the best moments of 2014 written on little pieces of paper. Hopefully I will have lots of good moments and I hope you do too. Its daunting, as I get older, to look at my diary and wonder what will have happened by the end of its pages. I just want to keep my loved ones safe and well, to laugh and cry and reach next year in one piece!!

Confessions of a Secret Housewife...

Now, before you get too excited this is not a raunchy reveal all!! I have been tagged by Bonnie Rose whom I am meeting for the first time tomorrow, along with 18 other bloggers, for Afternoon Tea! She has asked me, among others, to answer ten questions about myself and my blogging habits. Then I have to pass the tag on to other bloggers of my choice!

So ... here goes ...

1) When did you start blogging and why?
I started blogging in 2006. My uncle had started a Family Blog of which I was a contributor and I had found myself writing more and more. Rather than drive my family completely nuts by hogging all the posts I decided to start my own. So, New Year's Eve 2006 I sat down and started The Secret Life of an Unknown Housewife. I have always written, purely to keep myself sane and the blog opened a whole new world to me.

2) Have you had any past online presence?
Well ... just my uncle's Family Blog. Other than that ... no.

3)When did you become serious about your blog?
Mmmm... well, it depends what you mean by serious... I've always taken my writing seriously as its a way to keep myself from going round the bend. When I was at university I used to write reams of melancholy poetry - count yourself lucky I don't set up a poetry blog !! I never really expected anyone to read my blog and even now I get so excited when people leave comments. When I reached the Finals of the 2013 Brilliance in Blogging Awards I nearly burst with pride and excitement! But I don't look at myself as a writer per se and I don't think my blog if a particularly "professional looking" affair. Part of its charm, I think, is its honesty and its lack of reviews, adverts and so on - its just about me, my life and those things that interest me.

4) What was your first blog post?
My first blog post was written at 20.20 on New Year's Eve 2006 and was called "New Year's Eve and the Kids are Crying". My husband was at work for the night and I was alone in my house with two crying children. It is short and to the point and I obviously never expected anyone to ever read it!

5) What have been your biggest challenges blogging?
I think my main challenge has been staying true to myself. Its very easy to be tempted by the bright lights of awards and PR approaches. I have dallied with book reviews and almost wrote a sponsored post once, but have come to the conclusion that I am going to write about the things that I love and that, my friends, is all!!

6) What is the most rewarding thing about blogging?
Without doubt the most rewarding thing about blogging is the relationships I have built through the years with other people. On January 3rd 2007 I received my first comment and the thrill it gave me was amazing! Since that time I have read other people's blogs, followed their lives and been privileged to have them be a part of my life. There have been times, late at night, when I have sat alone sobbing over my keyboard, pouring my heart out, only to wake in the morning to find people from all over the world giving me support and kindness. There have been times when I hope I have provided similar support to others. This meeting of hearts and minds across the ether is what I truly love.

7) What is the most discouraging thing about blogging?
To be honest,  there isn't anything I find discouraging ... I love it!

8) What is your lasting inspiration or motivation?
God, that's a hard one ... I don't think my blog is as fancy as that. My writing isn't so much inspired as just necessary. At least people reading this can just click to the next blog without offending me if they're bored ... My friends and family are probably fed up with me going on about life and the universe as it is, so the blog spares them my rants on children and spouting about Henry Moore!! As I said before, writing keeps me sane ... always has, always will.

9) What is your current goal as a blogger?
My goal ... can I be totally honest with you? I did think about blagging my way through this and telling you that I want to work towards world peace ... but I just don't have a goal, as such. I just write about my life. Maybe I should have a goal. I know I would love to be recognised as a good blogger and perhaps being more focused on how to write well would help... I don't know. Is that bad?

Would you like to do this post??

Now ... just before the tenth question ... I would love it if you took part in this little confession. I am not going to tag anyone, but if you have read this post and would like to take part then please leave a message in my comments box and I will come and have a read of your blog post! You have to answer the first 8 questions above, then answer my question below and then write one question of your own! Do take part - I am naturally very nosy and would love to read your answers!!

10) If you could be better at any one aspect of blogging, what would it be?

Housework - hate it, have to do it...

I am not a good housewife. I have too many other things I am interested in and I am afraid that housework is way down on my list of 'things to do'. I am quick to add that my house is not a pig sty - it is lived in, cosy and although a little dusty occasionally, not dirty.

My friends houses seem to be divided into 2 camps. They are either amazing show homes with never a spot of dust or a sink that needs cleaning - or they are places with slightly sticky kitchen floors. I have a lovely friend who is brilliant at whipping up cakes and has a busy career too, but I am a little reluctant to have a cup of tea round her house as I'm never too sure what I will find at the bottom of my cup...

It seems to me that you either have to have a cleaner or you have to clean the place yourself everyday to keep it looking lovely. Am I right? My mum had a cleaner and I never took much notice of how often the house got cleaned. I just remember thinking that I would never greet my husband ( as my mum did) with the thrilling phrase " Did you notice, I polished the doors today?"

So my question is, am I doing it right? How often do you clean? Do you have a rota for yourself or do you clean everyday? Or do you clean it if it looks like it needs it? I love my house when it is freshly cleaned and gorgeous, but, to be honest, actually cleaning the place bores me witless. The only time it really looks good is when I am expecting people round, or at Christmas...

If you could tell me a foolproof way to keep my house lovely in about 5 minutes a day I would be thrilled! Whether you are the occupant of a show home or a place that could do with some anti bacterial spray ... why don't you let me know what you do?? Do you like housework? Do you hate it? Do you have a plan?? Share with me your secret!!!

A question for you...what would you love to study if you could choose anything?

This may be seen as an act of procrastination.... and it probably is... but I recently asked a few people what they would choose to study if they could learn something new. It was interesting to hear the responses. Many people understood me to mean an academic subject or something that would help them earn more money. I want to ask the same question to you out there. What would you choose to study if you could learn something new?

Think outside the box... be honest. If you could learn anything new, without the worry of cost or time, anything in the world... what would it be?

I have been watching Michel Roux' programme about service and I think that I would love to really know about wines. Not in a pretentious way to impress people, but in the comfortable, ancient way, possessed, for example, by an old French vineyard worker. Someone who has been around wines all their life, who knows the subtle flavours, the origins of the different vintages...

Or maybe I could take a year out and learn to ski really well. Or learn sign language... Maybe I could learn to sculpt... or make jewellery...

I don't know. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Ask me a question and I will try to answer .... don't get too freaked out!!

Ok... this may be a tad creepy and I may well remove the thing pretty darn sharpish, but I saw this VYou app. on Juli Ryan's blog over at Wellington Road and it just sort of appealed to me. I feel all Harry Potterish - sitting on my blog, staring out from a picture frame, waiting for you to ask me a question...

If you look over at my right hand side thingy I am sitting there twiddling my thumbs, waiting for you to ask a question. If you type in the question I get to read it and post a reply!! I just think its quite cool... and at the same time a bit strange!!

So, fire away... if you have a question, do feel free to ask. And if I can think of an answer that doesn't make me look like a complete numpty, I will record it.Don't expect me to sing or reveal any great intelligence. This may be a big mistake, but hey, if you don't try new things sometimes you don't learn do you?

I am expecting to discover, or rather confirm, that nobody out there cares one jot about what I think, but its just a bit of fun....

To videoblog or not to videoblog? That is the question...

I was thinking the other day... yes I do think quite a lot... I was thinking about blogging and about my new laptop. One of the things I was wondering about was video blogging. I really enjoyed Mr London Street's audio blog a little while ago and I wondered whether doing a monthly video blog would be something people might like? In the past I have posted a couple of films taken when I was out and about - mainly running so they were quite panty and jiggly... these would not be like that.

I wouldn't want to inflict myself on you more than once a month ... in fact I might not even do it at all... but its an idea. The things that worry me about it are that it would:

a)  be dull
b) be confused and rambling unless I read a post I had already written... but then that might be dull too...
c)  diminish my 'mystery status' and be a bit too revealing... although 'mystery status'... who am I kidding?
d)  be just too bloody self indulgent ... blah, blah, blah, look at me, look at me!!!

I would be interested in your views about this. And please be honest - you really cannot offend me. The nagging voice in my head tells me that I am just getting too up myself and to relax and keep it the way it is. I don't want to end up like some middle aged newsreader and all of you just wander off elsewhere because I am so dull!

Anyway - let me know, eh? Thank you!! xx

Houston... the allotment has landed... HELP!!!!

Not long ago I put my name down on the council list for an allotment. When I say 'not long ago ' I mean... about three weeks ago. I settled down to wait, amidst advice from friends and family that the wait could be anything from 6 months to 11 years!! Lots of time to study gardening books and get my own little back garden ready for the summer.

However, yesterday I arrived home from work to find a letter waiting for me ... offering me an allotment only 4 minutes walk away from my house!! A plot of 50m square ( that's about 30 feet by 15 feet I think ) for the princely rental sum of .... wait for it..... £10 per year.

I couldn't wait to go and find it! I strolled up the road and, after a little hunting, could see the allotments behind a couple of houses.Eventually I even found the entrance! It is a well hidden little plot to say the least! I couldn't actually get in to see my plot, as the gate was locked, but I am going to arrange to go and see it.

The big question is... should I take it? Do I have the time to care for it properly? It is only a little plot, but it will still take some clearing. My sister-in-law appears to have got cold feet over it so it would be down to me... Although my neighbour has offered to help a bit if I install a beer fridge!!

What do you think? Do you have an allotment and can you advise me please??!! I will take photos when I go to see it and will post asap. You never know - I could end up having a veggie blog as well as all the others!!

So many things to learn...............

I have so many things to learn about blogging. The more I do it the more I realise I want to learn !!

So, I have some questions that, if you can answer, I would be really grateful !

1. How do you put little links in your post ? Like when you want to have, say Tom's blog in the middle of a sentence so people can click and get straight through ?

2. Where do you get all these great little quizzes ?

3. How come some blogs have thousands of visitors ? How do people learn about them ?

O.k, enough questions. Calm down Sarah !!!!! Perhaps a calming photo would help ? This is a great by-product of blogging. I have started taking photos each day to put on my blog. It makes me more aware of my world!!

Fine, no calming photos today as I can't get it to work. AAAAAGH!!!!!! I'm calm, I'm calm.
