Cometh the Summer, cometh the rain, cometh the weeds ...

Having spent hours weeding the allotment you can imagine my thoughts when I went down there and discovered this....

It just doesn't seem fair ...
So I set about weeding ... AGAIN ... and after a while decided to put down more weed membrane on the path. My plan had been to do this at some stage when all my beds were built and then put gravel on top of it, but I really don't want to spend all my time weeding blinking paths when I should be weeding ... beds ... GROAN!!!

Luckily, using raised beds it is easier to keep the weeds down among my vegetables, but it does offend me to see so many weeds everywhere else!! Still - we are eating lots of potatoes and my French beans and cucumbers are looking fine.

As are my lettuces and runner beans ...

I do have a bit of a problem with blackfly.I have pinched out the sappy growing shoots that these horrible creatures enjoy so much and will have to spray with soapy water if they persist. There do seem to be lots of ladybirds about so I am leaving it a bit to see if they can knuckle down to work!

My carrots are looking lovely and I pulled a couple up to thin and they look nice.

So ... its going ok. I am loving eating meals that I have grown myself - potatoes especially are to die for!! Now I just need to get my last bed made, put gravel down and start thinking about some brassicas ... don't I sound all countrified??!!

Ugh. I know what you mean about the weeds. If it rains, it's like the weeds are on steroids. They sprout out of everywhere! My plots in the community garden are quite small, but it still takes me a good hour to weed each visit. I just wish I knew what celery looked like, because I can't tell what is a weed and what is a celery sprout. Fortunately, everything else is finally big enough to clearly let me know what is a real veggie and what is a weed. Weeds and slugs and mosquitos are the current bane of my existence. =)

But despite the weeds, your garden is looking lovely. And I can only imagine how delicious and satisfying it must be to eat the fruit of your labors. I am hoping that happens for me too in another month or two. We finally have had a few days of warmth and sun, but the growing season is quite behind here. I'll be lucky if we harvest any tomatoes before October!

Have a lovely week!
