A Valentines Day together...

My Man and I got together on Valentine's Day, 22 years ago. When we made it to 3 months I was chuffed - my longest ever relationship. And now, at 22 years, I am one happy girl! He is one gorgeous man and I love him with all my heart. He makes me laugh and doesn't let me take myself too seriously. When I see him my heart still skips a beat.

Our plan tonight is to avoid the packed restaurants, full of loved up couples, and we will be spending a romantic evening in, with the kids, eating large steaks and drinking pink champagne. The kids are not allowed champagne, but we are. I will probably end up falling asleep during the film we have decided to watch, and will dribble seductively over his shoulder.

Our house is completely in love at the moment as both my boys have girlfriends...WHAT??? They are 9 and 11 for Goodness sake!! Son#1 is spending his day texting his new girl and cuddling the teddy she bought for him, whilst gazing into the distance like a floppy puppy. Son#2 is out at an activity centre with his girl and her mum. They have been an item for some time and, according to her mum she loves my boy even more than broccoli!! Wow!! A special relationship.

I am enjoying their innocence and naivety, which I hope remains for some years to come. The hot news in the UK this week is that a 15 year old girl has given birth to a baby.... whose father is... wait for it... 13!!! Not quite the future I am planning for my boys. Can you imagine ??? 13 ???

Now, has this happened because of too much exposure to adult information and activities? Or has it happened because they knew too little, were too ignorant of the consequences of their actions? The way we go in our house is to be very open and honest with our boys about the ways of the world. I am glad that , so far, they have come to us to ask about all sorts of things regarding relationships, how babies are made, why they are different to girls. This may appall you, but they are both very innocent boys and we have spoken in age appropriate language. I want them to understand how important it is to respect girls and to be friends before anything else.I do not want them to end up with a pregnant girlfriend at the age of 13.

I don't want them to be embarrassed to talk to me about anything. As I grew up I was incredibly naive, still am in many ways, and I think its massively important that they face the world aware of what lies before them. ( As much as anyone can, anyway) I am hoping that they have happy, healthy relationships, but I know that along the way they will face heartbreak, like we all have. I don't want that heartbreak to be caused by ignorance of the facts of life and the thought that "it won't happen to them". Forewarned is forearmed.

In the meantime, as I say, we are all letting the soft waves of romance wash over us as we lie basking on the beach of happiness..... someone get me a bucket.

Wow, is that a photo of your man? He's pretty hot! As for your boys, I think it's sweet. My three were a little slower on the girl thing. The youngest is 16 and hasn't had a girlfriend yet...the oldest has developed a well-deserved distrust of females, and the middle has finally found another girl after having his heart broken twice. The one thing I must warn you about is this: your heart will break, too, whenever theirs do.

Hi MauritaMason. It is my Man and Yes... he is hot!! HAHA!! Iknow what you mean about having your heart broken too. Son #1 had a special "girl" friend from age 4 to age 9. She told him he was "dumped" because she liked his friend more. Oh, the tears... lots of hugs and hot chocolate help, I find!! S

Hi Balou ...Same to you! S

Lula... you don't look old enough to have grandkids!!!You are right though - I want them to stay safe and innocent for as long as possible, but I want them to be ready for the world as well... a difficult path to tread.S

What a romantic evening! After all love includes every one.

I think you are doing the right thing with the boys. Ignorance seems to cause more problems than knowledge.

Your main valentine is very handsome!

ok - your man is HOT! Woo hoo! No wonder your heart skips a beat...all the great things he does for you emotionally, and mentally, and it's wrapped up in THAT? Yowza! :D

OK - as for your boys - I am not appalled at all, and I think that more parents should be that way - appropriate words and conversations do wonders for keeping children safe from the nasty things in life...and prepares them to make decisions, as they continue to grow!
