I had a bit of a break from my essay writing earlier and watched a bit of One Born Every Minute. This is a must see tv programme for me. It is a fly on the wall look at life on a maternity ward in Southampton and it follows the lives of the women and their partners who go there to have their babies.I find it fascinating and moving.
One minute it can make you laugh, the next you are in tears. I love the juxtaposition of statements - the number of times they show a young mother to be being interviewed and saying, breathlessly, that she wants a natural birth, with no pain killers.The next shot shows her begging for an epidural!
I love watching the journey women take on their way to motherhood - the ups and downs, the fear and elation. I love to see the relationships between men and women, mothers and daughters, friends and siblings.It really shows the wonder of child birth in all its panting, sighing, wailing glory.
It brings back memories of my own babies being born - two very different experiences. But when I see those women going deep into themselves I remember how I felt. I remember being so far away from everything and I remember my man being there, feeling a little lost as to how he could help me.
I am so glad I don't have to do it again, but sharing other women's joy in a tiny part is a real privilege.

I have eight grandchildren with youngest five and I am beginning to miss having a baby around.

Writing: the ups and downs
It's strange, or maybe it's not really, but I can't watch this programme. After I stopped work as a midwife, following the very premature birth of DD1,(also followed by Prem birth of Twins) I lost all interest in watching other women give birth. Maybe it was my own very traumatic experience, or maybe I'd seen enough in 'work' mode. I think I would be watching and imagining my self back at work in the Del suite, stressed and nearly burnt out. I'm glad other people can see the wonder of it all though. I think it gets a bit lost when dealing with the stresses of working in an underfunded NHS.
I watched a clip once and thought it was horrendous. I can't bear to watch child birth which has never appealed to me in any way. It looks horrific and I want no part of it!
I love the show and I think that it shows an accurate depiction of giving birth. I mean how much more accurate do you need it to be? There's only 45 minutes and they are documenting three different birth stories so that is also taken into accountability. I work and subscribe to DISH Network and I watch this show and every other show on this channel with the Google TV! The Google TV is awesome because you are given the ability to watch TV and browse the internet at the same time. You can also integrate your DISH Network HD with the gadget and search anything on your DVR. You can also tab back and forth between TV and the internet and I use it when I want to tweet about the show that I'm watching at the moment and if you are a DISH Network subscriber, you can buy the Google TV at a discounted rate of $179! That's a $120 savings from what it retails for! Another great attribute to it is the keyboard, it can be setup to function your TV and your receiver so you will never have to worry about using a remote again. It's worked flawless for me and I am always recommending that people check out DISH Network and I am inviting anyone who comes across this post to explore the endless possibilities with DISH Network and experience a value unseen by any other TV provider!
