Since May half term I have been helping to run a gardening club at my work. Each week we have met, planted lettuces, herbs, marigolds, sunflowers, tomatoes ... Between us we have taught the children about planting and weeding, watering and caring for the plants. They have enthusiastically pinched out tomato side shoots and pulled weeds from between paving slabs.
Today we had our end of term summer gardening club picnic and it was just wonderful. We set up a long table in our garden courtyard and served the children pizza garnished with our homegrown oregano. We made salad with our lettuces and poured glasses of water that sparkled in the sunshine.
It was so uplifting to see such a happy scene - so simple and yet, I hope, something that will be remembered.
